The University of Tokyo Co-op provides a variety of room introduction services through affiliated real estate agencies (hereinafter referred to as “affiliated agencies”). Available areas and properties differ depending on the partner agencies. All detailed information on properties will be provided by the partner agencies. Looking for a room in a foreign country for the first time. There are many things that may be confusing. The University of Tokyo Co-op Housing Center will do its best to support international students in their apartment search.

「Room Search Guidebook」（For foreigners looking for a room in Japan）

In Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has produced a “Room Search Guidebook” in 14 languages to serve as a reference for foreign residents looking for a room. The guidebook contains basic knowledge and useful information necessary for finding a room in Japan, including how to look for a room, procedures for signing a contract, and points to keep in mind after moving in. Please refer to the “Room Search Guidebook”.

Ｗhen contracting an apartment, it is required to either [1] have a cosigner (joint guarantor) or [2] enroll in a rent guarantee service.

Among the above, it has become common for many apartments to set [2] enroll in a rent guarantee service as a condition for renting an apartment.

UTokyo CO-OP can provide you with our rent guarantee service: “大学生協安心スマイ君 (University CO-OP Anshin Sumai-kun)” operated by a subsidiary of the University CO-OP.　In some cases, however, property owner/management company may specify a rent guarantee company, so first please check with them before your application for this service.
